Cartron House Farm B & B | Description

Cartron House was built in 1770 and retains a wealth of the original character and style, reflecting the warmth and informality of the atmosphere you will experience during your stay with us. Nestling in the lush Galway countryside, there are spacious lawns and fields surrounding the house, which accentuates the air of rural serenity that Cartron House offers its guests.

All of the internal spaces and guest rooms have been lovingly improved with new showers and an emphasis on comfort and convenience. There is a large and comfortable sitting room with television, a delightful conservatory, and an outside deck for those sunny days. Pets are welcome outside, where they can enjoy the extensive grounds. The property is extremely child friendly. Children's meals are always available, and a cot and high chair are available upon request.

The bedrooms at Cartron House are all well furnished with the emphasis on comfort, combining the charm of the original 1770 construction with the sensitively applied level of modernity. En-suite facilities are available, with excellent recently upgraded showers and bathroom facilities.

Mealtimes are very flexible by arrangement, as are the menus, to ensure your satisfaction. Ann personally prepares all the meals freshly, and the plentiful and delicious food will be one of the great highlights of your stay at Cartron House. We pride ourselves on our ability to cater for vegetarian and vegan special diets, and we specialise in delicious, traditional Irish food whilst catering for all tastes with our flexible and varied approach to menus available. We bake our own bread daily, and serve locally produced, organically grown salads and vegetables whenever possible. Another culinary speciality at Cartron House is the Indian food.

Cartron House is set in large grounds and is a genuine haven from town or city life. It is situated in the rural Galway village of Ballinakill in tranquil countryside of rich farmland.

The nearest large town, Loughrea, takes its name from the beautiful lake, on the northern shore of which the town stands. It has been inhabited since prehistory and archaelogical remains are everywhere here.

The town can boast of having the only working Town Moat in Ireland. This water filled medieval moat was built in the mid 13th century. It ran directly outside the medieval walls and its circuit can still be seen.

For the past number of years, Lough Rea's excellent water quality and well maintained shore has earned it the European Blue Flag status making it one of the few inland lakes to receive this much coveted environmental award. The Long Point swimming area is well equipped with changing rooms and showers, ample parking and picnic areas.

In the south eastern end of the county, Portumna is well known as a fishing centre and marina for Lough Derg and the Shannon, with superb golf and tennis facilities.

Outside the town are the imposing ruins of Portumna Castle. Portumna Forest Park is one mile (2km) from the town on the Ennis road. This wildlife sanctuary of one thousand acres borders Lough Derg and has a laid out nature trial and many lovely forest walks.

Along with being a fantastic base for touring the Burren region and Slieve Aughty Mountains, it is an excellent spot for trout fishing and a variety of water sports.

Add to this, top class restaurants and traditional Irish pubs and you will see why Loughrea is such a popular holiday destination.
